Fleming Fund Project Announces New Medical Research Facilities in Pakistan

February 03, 2025

The U.K. Department of Health and Social Care-sponsored Fleming Fund project marked a significant development in medical education and healthcare services in Pakistan last month. The Fleming Fund project, which seeks to halt the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), globally, announced the inauguration of a newly built hall at the Khyber Medical University in Peshawar, Pakistan, named the Sir Alexander Fleming Hall, on January 31.

Fleming Hall will house a new Antimicrobial Resistance Centre of Excellence, featuring a state-of-the-art microbiology lab, and will advance research and public health policy. The Hall will also drive AMR research and training, better data utilization, and improved public health response and surveillance.

“The inauguration of Sir Alexander Fleming Hall is a major step forward in strengthening Pakistan’s response to AMR,” said Dr. Qadeer Ahsan, Team Lead, Fleming Fund Country Grant Pakistan. “This facility will serve as a hub for AMR research, surveillance, and policy coordination, ensuring that our fight against antimicrobial resistance is evidence-based and sustainable. Our partnership with the university reflects the commitment of the Fleming Fund and Pakistan’s healthcare community to protect the efficacy of antibiotics for future generations.”

AMR is a major global health threat that continues to grow due to the overuse of antibiotics in farming, healthcare, and the environment. Tackling the spread of resistance requires strong medical diagnostics, pharmaceutical management, and public health surveillance around the ways that antibiotics are used and managed. The Fleming Fund supports countries to strengthen these capabilities and to use surveillance data and research to effectively build public policy around antimicrobial medicines. DAI is the implementing partner for Fleming Fund country grants in Pakistan.
