Indonesia - Community-Based Avian Influenza Control (CBAIC) Project
The Indonesian government's workshop on Pandemic Preparedness Plans (PPP) was held August 2007 hosted and sponsored by KOMNAS/FBPI (Indonesian National Committee for Avian Influenza Control and Pandemic Influenza Preparedness). Among the participants were representatives from USAID, WHO, UNICEF, and AusAID. Presentations and follow-up discussions focused on the essential elements of a PPP, key findings from the meta-analysis of 45 PPPs worldwide, the role of the private sector in an influenza pandemic, and critical community-level issues encountered in mitigating pandemic influenza.

Workshop participants worked in small groups to develop key components of the plan, reviewing and developing elements including:
  • Surveillance and detection
  • Isolation, quarantine, and protection
  • Public health and treatment
  • Business continuity and critical infrastructure
  • Rehabilitation and recovery
  • Communication needs and priorities
  • Role of the community
The workshop ended with discussion of common themes and next steps. Over the following months, this initial framework will be developed into a more detailed plan, then shared, discussed, and operationalized to better prepare the public and private sectors for a possible pandemic outbreak.
